Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the powerful additional treatment modalities available from Dr. Gregory Kos at the Kos Chiropractic Centre.
Acupuncture is an ancient healing art. In most western cultures it is considered a “new alternative” medicine. In reality, the practice of acupuncture is over 5,000 years old.
Very basically, acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles, (sometimes in conjunction with electrical stimulus) in order to influence physiological functioning of the body. Acupuncture needles are placed in specific acupuncture points on the body which influence and improve muscular tone, pain perception, and inflammation.
The insertion of needles is done in a gentle and pain free fashion. There are many muscle, ligament and soft tissue conditions that can be treated successfully by acupuncture. The most common ailments currently being treated are:
- Lower back pain
- Neck and arm pain
- Arthritic Conditions
- Hip and leg pain
- Headaches (of all kinds including migraine)
- Relief of muscles spasms
In some cases Electro-Acupuncture is also be used. Electro-acupuncture involves the use of very small electrical impulses which are applied through the acupuncture needles. This method is generally used for analgesia or pain reduction.
One of the most popular alternatives to acupuncture is acupressure. This is simply acupuncture without needles. Acupressure involves the stimulation of the acupuncture points performed with the fingers or an instrument with a hard ball shaped head. Acupressure is generally used in those patients who are reticent or nervous about the use of needles and want to experience similar health providing effects of acupuncture.
All needles used at the Kos Chiropractic Centre are disposable needles therefore they are only used once and then discarded in accordance with medical biohazard regulations and guidelines.
